Devendra K. Gupta, had been involved in patient care, teaching and research in pediatric surgery for almost 40 years at AIIMS, New Delhi, the high volume tertiary care level centre, recognized internationally. He has operated over 12,000 children with special interest in pediatric urology, hepatobiliary surgery, hypospadias, ambiguous genitalia, Hydronephrosis, esophageal replacement, Hirschsprung’s disease and anorectal anomalies.

He has so far trained over 105 postgraduates who are now the leaders in the speciality in India and overseas. He has published 12 reference books (Two books translated in Chinese and Polish languages) and 524 scientific articles, book chapters and editorials. He has delivered 477 guest lectures in 84 countries, including the Key note Lecture at the Parliament Hill, Ontario, Canada.

He had organized 59 educational CME Programs, operative workshops and international congresses in pediatric surgery (including the Vice Chancellor’s conclave, Millennium Congress of the KGMU Alumni, 3rd World congress, 20th Asian Congress, 4th SAARC Congress, 36th Annual Indian Association congress, 30th International Research congress and the 5th world congress of DSD).

He has received life time achievement awards, several titles, Honors, awards and Medals from India and overseas including the Hony. FRCS- Edinburg & Glasgow, Fellow of the College of Surgeons from Srilanka, Honorary Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Romania, Honorary D.Sc from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj Nepoca, Romania.

He has also been conferred the RK Gandhi Gold Medal, PC Gupta Memorial medal from Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, The Medal from West Bengal Association, Ricstamann Medal from Sweden, Imre Pilaszanovich Medal from Hungary, Medal from the Kyushu University, Japan Medal from the Military Hospital, Egypt & several other awards.

As the Vice Chancellor of the prestigious, King George Medical University, Lucknow, he established a Postgraduate Institute of Child Health and the Advanced Centre for Molecular Biological Research.

Apart from President of Indian, Asian and SAARC Associations, he was also the President of World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS), representing over 100 country associations in Pediatric surgery. He has established a charity and is actively involved to assist the health care of children in Afghanistan, DPR-Congo, Nepal, Bangladesh & other countries.
