Arnold (“Arnie”) W. Strauss received his undergraduate degree cum laude in philosophy from Stanford University and completed his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. Following pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Arnie performed post-doctoral training with P. Roy Vagelos ascertaining mechanisms and signals underlying compartmentalization of proteins. In 1977, Dr. Strauss joined the faculty at Washington University rising to the rank of Professor in 1982, when he also became Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. In 2000, Dr. Strauss became the James C. Overall Professor and Chair of Pediatrics and Medical Director of Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Arnie was then recruited to be the Rachford Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and Director of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation in 2007. He stepped down from those roles in 2014, but remains an active investigator and involved in strategic planning for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in both research and clinical program development as well as in advocacy for enhanced funding for pediatric research nationally.
He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research, American Pediatric Society, the American Association of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Strauss’ research interests include the molecular basis of genetic disorders of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and myocardial energetics. His research was recognized by the E. Mead Johnson Award for Excellence in Pediatric Research in 1991 and the Basic Research Prize from the American Heart Association in 2006. He has published more than 240 research and invited articles and served a research mentor for more than 60 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
Dr. Strauss and his wife, Patricia, have two daughters, Lara, an attorney in California, and Natasha, who passed away in 2015.
